1. Why should I choose MacHighway over a company with UNIX or Windows NT servers?

The main reason you should sign up with MacHighway is our service. We do not outsource our web hosting customer support to a third party phone bank like most companies do. When you call us you're talking to a highly trained individual who's been helping people like you for several years. Even the company's founder still answers the phones and helps customers.

Also, MacHighway provides unmatched support for the Macintosh market. We know the software you're using, problems you may encounter and how to troubleshoot existing problems. And as opposed to most hosting companies who only have one Macintosh specialist and he's out to lunch, we eat, sleep and breathe the Mac. When you call us, your issue will be addressed by someone who knows what you're talking about.

See what our customers have to say about us.

And still more - our servers are in the the best facility with the best Internet connectivity - hands down. We are connected to 6 different Internet backbone providers via a 10 Gigabit OC-192 Ring. This means that all 6 providers would have to go down at the same time for your web site to be unreachable. In comparison, most other hosting companies connect through only one backbone provider. If that one backbone goes down your website is inaccessible. They also measure their bandwidth in Megabits, not Gigabits. Our large pipes to the Internet are much less likely to get overloaded.

2. Can someone with a Windows PC or other system access and/or build a website hosted on a Macintosh?

Absolutely. The whole point of the Internet is cross-platform compatibility. Therefore, it would be down-right silly for us to exclude the Windows PC, or any other computer type, from being able to enjoy your site. We adhere strictly to all Internet standards. Anybody who is connected to the Internet can access sites hosted by us and any software that you use to build a website on any platform will work as well.

3. Where can I get a domain name?

Don't have a domain name yet? Registration for .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us domains is just $9.95 a year with any MacHighway web hosting or email only package for as long as you host your web site or email with MacHighway.

4. I already have a domain name. Can I use it with your service?

Yes. You can transfer your domain registration to MacHighway or leave your domain registered where it is and just change the name servers (called a redelegation)

Transferring your .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us domains is just $9.95. If you transfer your registration to MacHighway it adds an extra year to your registration, so if you have six months left before your domain name expires, transferring it to MacHighway will change the expiration to 18 months. After that registration will just be $9.95 a year for as long as you host your site with us.

Of course, MacHighway can host any other domain (valid TLD) as well, but currently do registrations/transfers for only those listed above. So, if you have a domain we can't transfer or register or if you prefer to leave your existing domain name registered where it is you can still use it with our services. All you need to do is change the nameservers listed with your domain name regsitration - this is easy and we'll help you do it at no extra charge.

5. I want to move my site from another hosting company to you. What do I need to do?

This is usually a painless procedure. However, to reduce the chance that your site will be down during your move to us we recommend the following steps:

A. Sign up with us so we can give you upload access to our servers as well as get other services ready to go for you.

B. Upload your web site to our server. You'll be given a temporary web address that you can use to test your site and make sure everything is working as it should.

C. Login to the email control panel and establish the emails you want at your domain. Email addresses, like website files, don't transfer from host to host.

D. Change your domain's primary and secondary name servers to ours (sometimes called a "redelegation"). We will help you do this at no extra charge. You can also transfer your domain registration to us for $9.95. Transferring your domain registration to MacHighway is just $9.95. If you transfer your registration to MacHighway it adds an extra year to your registration, so if you have six months left before your domain name expires, transferring it to MacHighway will change the expiration to 18 months. After that registration will just be $9.95 a year for as long as you host your site with us.

D. Check email at both hosts. You may want to use our webmail intially until you are no longer receiving mail from your old host. At that point, you can change your mail application to check messages from our servers exclusively.

E. Once the domain name servers change or transfer has been completed, usually in two to three days, you can cancel your web hosting services with your current (now former) host.

6. Can I have more than one domain name point at my site?

Absolutely. You can have additional domain names that redirect to your primary domain name (for example: "www.mycompany.org" and "www.mycompany.net" would redirect the visitor to "www.mycompany.com"). There is a one-time additional charge of $10.00 per domain name. If you have our MacHighway Huge package the first two redirects are free.

Some people also use this feature if they have registered domain names that are common misspellings. For example: "www.mycompanie.com" redirects to "www.mycompany.com".

7. Can I have an additional domain point to a sub-folder within my site?

No, you will need to sign up for an additional hosting package. However any additional package you add on that meets our bulk discount criteria will be at a substantially lower cost.

8. Can I get e-mail for an address at my domain name?

Yes, you can. One of the nicest things about having your own domain name is that you can have e-mail addresses for it. Instead of telling friends and business associates that your e-mail is xP12_r9@aol.com, you can now tell them that you are Jill@mycompany.com (although, if your name isn't Jill, you can always change that).

MacHighway offers both POP and alias (forwarding) addresses for you to use with your domain name. For more information, feel free to contact us.

9. What's the difference between a POP and an Alias e-mail account?

A POP e-mail account is probably the type that you're most familiar with. When using a POP e-mail account, e-mail messages come in to our mail server and are held until you retrieve them using an e-mail application (such as Eudora, Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator, PowerMail). A POP requires a username and a password to access your e-mail.

The easiest way of describing an alias is to say that it automatically forwards e-mail to another existing e-mail account. For example, bob@yourdomain.com could forward to b_1435@aol.com or bob@earthlink.com or even bob-M@yourdomain.com. There is no limitation on where you can have the e-mail forwarded to. This is handy for those of you who only want to deal with one e-mail account, but would like different e-mail addresses.

10. Does MacHighway provide dial-up Internet access?

No. Our focus is on hosting web sites and other closely related services such as domain name registration and e-commerce. We think you'll find our specialized knowledge and resources useful. Your web site is important to us, it's not just a side business. We take web hosting seriously - it's all we do.

11. How many pages can my website have?

It's not the number of pages your website has, it's the amount of space in megabytes those pages and graphics take up. Our packages allow anywhere from 100 MB of space on the MacHighway Mini to 5000 MB of space on the MacHighway Huge Package and up. To get an idea about how much disk space your site takes up, highlight the folder containing your site on your computer by clicking once on it and then go to your "File" menu and choose "Get Info".

12. I used a site building software package to make my website. Can MacHighway host a site built with that software?

Yes we can. Programs like Dreamweaver, GoLive and Pagemill generate standard HTML coded pages. HTML code is the language all web pages are built with..

In addition, we can also host sites made using standard Flash, LiveMotion and sites utilizing regular RealAudio, RealVideo, Quicktime, or MP3's and much more. Feel free to contact us if you have additional questions about file compatibility.

13. Why don't you offer Quicktime streaming?

We offer all forms of Quicktime hosting with the exception of streaming. The reason for this is that quicktime streaming is really only needed for live broadcasts, which is a more complicated setup than a shared hosting environment can provide. If you have a very large movie that you want to show on the internet, consider using the "Export Movie to Quicktime Movie" option in Quicktime pro, which will allow you control of the quality and size of the movie and will start the movie using the fast start method, so that you your visitor can begin watching the movie before it's fully downloaded. If you are concerned about bandwidth usage or you want to control your visitors ability to download the movie, consider uploading the movie to YouTube.com and either linking to the movie or embedding the movie into your pages.

14. Which package is right for me?

The size of your site in megabytes and additional features you may want to utilize should help you decide on which package best suits you. If you have a small site that is low in traffic and needs only one email address our MacHighway Mini Package may be right for you. Feel free to contact us if you have questions - we'll help you assess your needs.

For more information on package prices and features, review our Web Hosting Plans page.

15. Why don't you offer 24/7 tech support?

We pride ourselves on providing unbeatable support for our customers. We ensure that our customers receive the correct answers to their questions on the first call. Because of our high quality standards we only hire highly experienced people to man the phones, which is very unlike what you'd get from the other guys. When you call the other companies you'll probably get just a "customer support representative" or an "associate". Some companies even outsource their customer support to a third party phone bank. Everybody answering the phones at MacHighway is an experienced IT engineer and Mac user. When you call us you're talking to a highly trained individual who's been helping people like you for several years. Even the company's founder still answers the phones and helps customers.

MacHighway offers 12 hours of technical and customer support every weekday from 8 AM to 8 PM (mountain time). This means our customer support staff is available during standard business hours whether you're in North America, Moscow, or Tokyo. Our servers and our network are monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by our technical staff.

16. What happens if a server goes down during tech support off hours?

We monitor our servers from three different locations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. In the rare instance that a server goes down these monitoring systems restart the disabled server and bring it back up. If this doesn't bring the server back our on-call technician is notified immediately and that server is checked out and restored by a person.

17. Why doesn't your site sport that great "Aqua" look like so many other Macintosh related sites?
Although we do love the Aqua interface in Mac OS X, we thought when Steve Jobs said to "Think Different" he meant "Think Different" and not "Think Like Steve", but we could be wrong on that one ;-)

18. Can I upload a site made in iWeb to your servers?
Absolutely. We even offer instructions for doing just that in our support section here.
