Support Topics: Email: How To: Secure your email using SSL

What you would use this for: Using SSL Email will help prevent the possibility of somebody eavesdropping or tampering with your email when being sent to and retrieved from MacHighway's mail servers. It is just like accessing a secure server when buying things on the Internet - i.e. when you see the padlock icon that appears in most browsers when on a secure page. The padlock means that all data, including your user name and password, is being encrypted both coming from and going to the seller's server. SSL email works the same way by scrambling and descrambling (encrypting) information between your computer and the MacHighway mail servers. The data is only encrypted between your email application (such as Apple's Mail or Microsoft's Entourage) and MacHighway's mail servers - nothing special is required of the person(s) you are sending messages to.

When to use it: You can use SSL email all the time if you prefer, but especially when sending or receiving email using a public connection (such as WiFi in a coffeehouse) or anytime you are unsure of the security of the connection you are using (perhaps all the time). If you do not use SSL email, especially on a public connection, anybody else can possibly intercept your user name, password and the contents of your messages.

How to use it: Most common email applications support using SSL. Even our WebMail system works over SSL. To set up to use SSL email please see instructions for various email applications below:

Webmail
Apple's Email Application (POP - IMAP - Outgoing)
Entourage / Outlook Express (Mac) (POP - Outgoing)
Mulberry (Mac) (POP - Outgoing)
Eudora (Mac) - coming soon.
Outlook (PC) - coming soon.
